Latrigg is one of the smaller Wainwrights but is a hidden gem. Being located so close to Keswick, it is a popular fell with visitors and tourists to the area. Especially with the stunning views, it offers of Keswick and Borrowdale from above. Standing in front of Skiddaw does not hold the same dominance over the skyline but certainly gives a good reward at the summit.

HIKING/TRAIL RUNNING ROUTE FROM KESWICK

The best place we recommend to park is at the Crosthwaite Road Car Park, Crosthwaite Rd, Keswick CA12 5PP, just behind the hospital. From here as you leave the car park you want to take a right along Crosthwaite road taking the first right onto Brundholme Road. Travel along this road for 300m then a wide obvious gravel path will appear on your left, taking you off the main road. The path will lead you over a footbridge over the bypass then past a house on your left....

You will pass through a wooden gate and the path starts to climb through the wood. You will want to ignore all paths darting off to the right as the path you will want to stay in the Cumbria way which initially follows the fence line. The path starts a little muddy but as you move away from the fence line the path turns to more gravel. It is very clear on obvious leading you through some bushes, over a small river and gauss in places. After following this path for 500-600m you will reach a wooden gate which you will want to pass through, and the path starts to bear right. The path continues along the fellside and reaches a signpost marked “Latrigg Summit” The path will then zigzag up the side of the fell and then the gradient eases off as you reach the top of the climb.

The path slowly continues to climb for a further 1 km where you will reach a bench. The actual summit of the fell is located further back up behind the bench. The path continues a further 200m to a small grass hump which indicates the summit of the fell.

The best way to descend Latrigg is to return along the path you came up. However, there are other trods available from the summit but may be harder to follow.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Caution should be taken at all times when running or hiking in the Lake District fells. Only undertake a route if you are adequately prepared and fully equipped for the conditions you might face, ensuring to carry all emergency equipment. Headtorch with spare batteries, a full set of waterproofs, emergency blankets, and whistle. Please also ensure you are confident in the use of a map and compass.

Check mountain weather forecasts before setting off (the weather can change very quickly in the fells, especially higher up) and always let someone else know the route you are planning to take.

Stay on the designated paths, respect the countryside, leave gates as you find them, take all your litter home, and no leave nothing but footprints.

For more advice on safety in the Lake District fells we thoroughly recommend you read these two pages by Mountain Rescue and Lake District National Park.

Kit advice: The highest peaks in England are prone to unpredictable and inhospitable weather, so for this walk, we recommend the Thermoshell Pro Insulated Jacket for extra warmth if the temperate plummets and the Stormshell Waterproof Jacket for maximum waterproofing.
