HOW TO REPAIR A TORN WATERPROOF JACKET OR TROUSERS

You’re out enjoying a run, hike or adventure when you accidentally snag your beloved waterproof on a barbed wire fence. Don’t worry - it happens to us all and, yes, small rips and tears can easily be repaired at home. Our advice below will work on all waterproofs and other outer layers like insulated jackets and windshells. Check out our short video or written description on how to do it. We’ll help you be back out on the trails in no time!

Step By Step Guide:

1.     Make sure your garment is clean and dry before you start. Either wash it with Grangers Performance Wash, or spot clean the area you’ll be working on.

2.     Lay out the garment, and smooth out the area you’ll be working on so that it’s sitting flat against a hard surface. You want the fabric around the rip to match up so that you can’t see a hole. You can apply the repair tape to the outside or the inside of the garment, however the smoother side of the fabric might work better.

Tip: If you find it difficult making the fabric stay in place, you can use some regular sticky tape on the other side of the fabric to temporarily hold an oddly shaped tear in place. This will be removed when you’re finished.

3.     Get out some proven repair tape, like Tenacious Tape, and a pair of scissors.

4.     Take the repair tape or repair patches and using scissors cut a piece that’s ideally 2.5cm/1 inch bigger than the tear that you’re repairing. Make sure to round off any edges.

5.     Peel off the backing layer from the repair tape and apply it over the tear by smoothing it out, from the middle out. Avoid getting air bubbles or folds in the fabric underneath.

6.     You’re now good to go, and your beloved waterproofs are waterproof again!
