How To Choose The Right Running Jacket

inov-8 jacket 3
Picking the right running jacket can be a tough and confusing process. Over the years we’ve tested hundreds of running jackets/shells in every weather condition imaginable and now provide a simplified range to meet all eventualities on the trails and mountains. Meet our magnificent seven, starting with waterproofs and followed by windproof & thermal jackets:

WATERPROOF JACKETS – FOR WHEN IT’S RAINING!

1. PROTEC-SHELL – OUR MOST PROTECTIVE WATERPROOF RUNNING JACKET

When best to use: Multi-day training runs, challenges and adventures.

In what conditions: The most fierce of winter conditions.

Whether it’s relentless rain, gale-force winds, driving snow, freezing temperatures or all of these combined, the PROTEC-SHELL will keep you dry, warm and protected. This is a seriously tough piece of kit.

The hooded jacket has been designed using Pertex Shield Pro, a 3-layer waterproof fabric. It has a Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating of 20,000mm – the measure of how water resistant the material is. Discover more about Hydrostatic Head at the bottom of this blog post.

It weighs 295g. This is the heaviest jacket in our waterproof range, but is still considered very lightweight and breathable given the huge level of protection it delivers.

Three cool features:
1. A front zip that curves away from the face for increased comfort.
2. Strips on the sleeves that divert downward flowing rainwater away from the hands.
3. Deep crossover pockets, positioned away from backpack straps, so essentials can be easily accessed.

2. STORMSHELL – OUR MOST VERSATILE WATERPROOF RUNNING JACKET

When best to use: Intense trail/mountain training sessions and races.

In what conditions: Persistent heavy rain, strong winds and storms.

When wanting a faster-feel, lighter, albeit slightly less protective, jacket than the PROTEC-SHELL, the STORMSHELL ticks all the boxes. A versatile classic of the inov-8 range, this super-popular option has recently undergone a redesign to give it more of an athletic feel.

The hooded jacket has been designed using Pertex Shield, a 2.5-layer waterproof fabric. It has a Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating of 20,000mm. It also has a breathability rating of 20,000g B-1 – the measure of how breathable the material is. This means sweat moves through the jacket, resulting in temperature regulation and increased comfort. Discover more about breathability ratings at the bottom of this blog post.

It weighs 175g for men and 150g for women, so it comes in significantly lighter than the PROTEC-SHELL.

Three cool features:
1. It packs away into its own pocket making it small and easy to carry in a backpack or waist-pack.
2. A button clip on the chest allows the runner to unzip the jacket for increased ventilation, while maintaining a close fit.
3. The hood can be quickly adjusted using a single cord for a more protective fit around the face.

3. RACESHELL – OUR MOST COMFORTABLE WATERPROOF RUNNING JACKET

When best to use: More relaxed trail/mountain training sessions and steady races.

In what conditions: Heavy rain showers and cold-blowing winds.

Heavier than the STORMSHELL but lighter than the PROTEC-SHELL, the RACESHELL sits in between the two and offers you increased comfort and warmth over the STORMSHELL, albeit slightly less waterproof protection.

The hooded jacket has been designed using a super-soft 2-layer waterproof fabric. It’s these super-soft qualities of the fabric that allow for extra stretch across the upper body. This is combined with a soft-feel inner fabric that helps deliver warmth and increased comfort. It has a Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating of 13,000mm and a breathability rating of 20,000g B-1.

It weighs 270g for men and 240g for women.

Three cool features:
1. Velcro straps on the cuffs allow micro adjustment for the perfect fit around the wrists.
2. Deep pockets, positioned away from backpack straps, so essentials can be easily accessed.
3. Reflective logos on the front, back and arms give extra visibility when running in the dark.

4. ULTRASHELL – OUR LIGHTEST WATERPROOF RUNNING JACKET

When best to use: When racing. Wear or carry when competing in trail/mountain races.

In what conditions: Rain showers and strong winds.

Weighing just 108g, the ULTRASHELL is the lightest waterproof jacket in the range and designed for runners wanting to race as light and fast as possible.

The hooded jacket has been designed using a 2.5-layer waterproof fabric. It has a Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating of 10,000mm and a breathability rating of 10,000g B-1. To have a jacket this light there has to be a slight compromise. So, while it may lack the same super-high levels of protection as other waterproof jackets in the range, it still keeps you dry and allows sweat to escape… and, did we mention, it weighs just 108g!

The perfect option when looking for the lightest possible waterproof jacket to carry as part of mandatory race kit.

Three cool features:
1. The fabric is fully transparent so race numbers worn underneath remain visible at all times.
2. Can be rolled up super-small and secured in place using an integrated elastic loop.
3. Light and easy to carry in a backpack or waist-pack.

WINDPROOF JACKETS – FOR WHEN IT’S WINDY!

5. WINDSHELL – OUR LIGHTEST WINDRPOOF RUNNING JACKET

When best to use: Intense trail or mountain training sessions.

In what conditions: All windy conditions. Dry day or light rain showers.

Weighing a mere 106g for men and 96g for women, the WINDSHELL is the lightest of all our jackets.

It is designed to protect your upper body from cold winds and help keep it warm. While it’s not a waterproof jacket, it is water resistant and provides protection in light rain showers.

The hooded jacket features a Pertex Quantum fabric, which as well as providing excellent windproof protection also delivers outstanding breathability. Vented zones under the arms and on the back of the jacket allow sweat to escape.

Close-fitted so it doesn’t flap in the wind, the WINDSHELL is so light it feels like you’re not even wearing it.

Three cool features:
1. It packs away into its own pocket making it small and easy to carry in a backpack or waist-pack.
2. Fitted hood can be rolled up and securely fastened when not in use, so it doesn’t flap in wind.
3. Thumb loops mean you can pull the sleeves further down to give more protection to your hands.

In what conditions: Extremely cold and windy. Dry day or light rain showers.

When you don’t need a full waterproof and you want a bit more warmth and protection than a lightweight windproof provides, then the SOFTSHELL PRO thermal running jacket is the perfect choice. It really excels on the coldest, windiest of days.

Constructed with Pertex Equilibrium fabric for increased warmth and zoned Pertex Quantum fabric for outstanding protection, it perfectly stretches with the upper body ensuring an unrestricted running movement.

While it’s not a waterproof jacket, it is water resistant and provides protection in light rain showers.

The hooded jacket weighs 325g for men and 300g for women.

Three cool features:

Designed with Polartec Alpha insulation, it delivers lightweight, packable warmth with superior breathability. It is perfect for running in changeable, cool and windy conditions on the trail and mountain and during different phases of physical activity.

It stretches with the body while running, is brilliantly windproof and provides water resistant protection too.

More Details:

*Hydrostatic Head: This is the measure of how water resistant the material is. For any fabric to be considered waterproof it must be able to withstand the pressure of a column of water 1,000mm high without leaking. For example, the PROTEC-SHELL and STORMSHELL have been tested to withstand the pressure of a column of water 20,000mm high.

*Breathability: This is the amount of water vapour that can pass through a square meter (m2) of the fabric from the inside to the outside in 24 hours. So a 20,000g rated fabric (like that on the STORMSHELL and RACESHELL) allows 20,000 grams of vapour out. The higher the figure the more breathable the fabric is.

*Taped seams: All our waterproof jackets have taped seams throughout to ensure the best in protection.
