Psyched ahead of 100km Kiwi race

Shona Stephenson looks ahead to the Tarawera Ultra

I’m racing overseas for the first time to compete in the Tarawera Ultra 100km trail event, New Zealand, on Saturday.

I’ve never been to this part of New Zealand before, though my husband is a Kiwi and my kids are half New Zealand.

I have seen some parts of the country but I’ve never have had the chance to visit the beautiful lakes around Rotarura. I’ve always been really keen to experience the volcanic landscape of the region and it’s volcanic mud baths. I hear they are amazing for your body.

The forest and terrain in New Zealand is totally different to the Australian bush that I am used too. I think the Tarawera Ultra 100km will be a great stepping stone in my preparations for the SkyRunner World Series races I’ll be doing in June and July.

The trail in Rotarura is mainly single track, which is one of my strengths. I think I will really enjoy testing out my agility against the rugged, yet beautiful, course.

An international field of elite runners will be racing all the three Tarawera Ultra events, over 60km, 85km and 100km. I am keen to test myself against some of the best runners in the world.

Fellow inov-8 athlete Brendan Davies and I have been training hard together in Australia and I believe we are both in with a good chance of placing on the podium.

The Tarawera Ultra race director, Paul Charteris, has gone all out to promote trail running in the Oceanic region. He has organised an athlete seminar and an exhibition centre, which both Brendan and I will be at, helping out at the inov-8, Barefoot Inc and Hammer Sports Nutrition stand.

I will race in my inov-8 x-talon™ 190 shoes.

I’m really looking forward to the race and having a ball on Kiwi soil.
