Brendan Davies smashes 50k personal best by nine minutes – wearing ‘freaking fast’ road-x-treme 178s
I’ve raced the Canberra Marathon in Australia three times previously and on each occasion said to myself ‘I’m going to run a fast marathon then hang on and do the extra 8km for the ultra.
A couple of times I’ve even tricked myself into thinking the extra 8km is just a marathon cool down…..let me tell you it is definitely not!
So this year I went into the race knowing that to do a good time I had to forget about the shorter marathon distance (42km) and focus on running 50km. This is hard, believe me! Watching the marathon runners sail off into the distance was no easy thing early on. I was careful with my pace and had to constantly rein it in.
In the end, my conservative pacing strategy worked. In fact, when I passed under the marathon finish line, I was only 7 seconds outside my marathon personal best time.
On the extra 8km I continued with my pretty damn consistent pace and gained one more place to make the podium.
My time (3:05:01) was a massive PB, knocking nine minutes of my previous best for 50km.
I wore the new inov-8 road-x-treme 178 shoes, which were freaking fast!
