My husband, Chris & I traveled from North Carolina to Waleska, Georgia for the 2nd race in the La Sportiva Cup series, “Assault on Garland Mountain”. The ride down was hilarious because we packed Chris’ Fiat with all of our gear for the night, the race & Saturday, along with a dog crate & our two fur children Yepa & Olive. We were busting at the seams in the car!
Imagine all this then add me & luggage for two plus entertainment & food for the “babies”.
During our 4 + hour drive to Georgia, we made a couple of stops & decided to wait get checked in before we get a shakeout jog in. Boy, was that a mistake! We checked into our hotel & found loads of greenways & parks around; however, none were dog-friendly! Signs were posted “No Dogs allowed per order of the Health Department”. We knew if the dogs weren’t able to get a run in, we would not be able to sleep that night! I scoped out a paved parking area around a local high school & set out to get a shake out jog in with Yepa & Olive in tow. They were super excited & pulled me around the pavement at lightning speed. This probably wasn’t the most ideal shake out jog but it made do with the circumstances.
Olive (pictured above) & Yepa finally relaxed for the evening.
So, the assault that took place on 3/8/14 in Waleska, Georgia was an assault to the legs from a 9.6 mile (or 4 mile) trail race. The race was one of the 10 races in the La Sportiva Cup series.

The race organizer, Lisa Randall with Mountain Goat Adventures did a great job with marking the course, registration, a kids fun trail run, Hammer nutrition refreshments, unique awards & drawing in a competitive field for the event (Ryan Woods, Gabriel Rodriquez, Jason Bryant, Megan Kimmel & Alison Bryant to name a few). The 9.6 mile course was rolling & slightly wider than single track trails. The 9.6 mile race started first, followed by the 4 mile then the kids run.
The race took off fast from the start. The lead men quickly gapped the lead women & other runners & were out of sight. Megan Kimmel lead the women while I ran with Deanna McCurdy.

The assault on my legs began around mile 7 into the course. I outpaced my current Lactate threshold level & I felt the wheels coming off. My pace came to a screeching halt. I sucked down a Huckleberry flavored Hammer gel that gave me enough energy to hang on to the 3rd place female.
Ryan Woods won the men’s race, Gabriel Rodriquez was 2nd, Matt Haley was 3rd & Jason Bryant was 4th.
On the women’s side, Megan Kimmel won, Deanna McCurdy was 2nd, I was 3rd, Tara Mooney was 4th, Tiffany Bellucci was 5th & Alison Bryant was 6th.
Overall, the Assault on Garland Mountain was a fun race & great experience. It was nice to get to chat & catch up with Ryan, Alison & Megan post race. I’m already looking forward to the next adventure……
